Much of technology is about features, and photo picture frames are no exception. Here are some things to look for when making your purchase.

How is the device powered? If it is electric, then keep in mind it will be have to be placed in range of a power source. If it is battery powered, a rechargeable device might be worth the extra cost so save on batteries. Also, to conserve power, battery powered devices should be light sensitive to turn off in the dark.

Confirm that the digital photo frame supports the type of picture files that will be displayed. JPEG files are the most common and every device should support them. If you wish to display another file type, make sure it is supported by the device.

For those who want to play movies, check to see if the digital photo frame can play moves and the type of movies (usually MPEG) you have. Also, confirm it can play MP3 files if you would like the frame to play music as well as display pictures.

Some want the convenience of being able to stream pictures directly from their computer to the picture frame. To do this, it will need to have Wi-Fi or an Ethernet connection. Also, if interested in streaming pictures from photo sites like Flickr, confirm the device has that capability.

Check the controls to make sure they are easy to access and use. Those that are touch sensitive and in front of the frame are usually the best.

Memory is of course important. Keep in mind that SD storage and other flash memory is very cheap now. A cheap digital photo frame that does not have much internal memory but allows an external storage device might be the better choice than an more expensive one with more internal storage.

Depending on how cheap of a frame you desire, there are an increasing number of extra functions that are included on the higher priced models. While most frames have more basic features like timers and clocks, some brands have extra features such as resizing the picture to fit the screen or automatically orientating the picture with the orientation of the screen. Zoom capability and image manipulation functions can also be found on some models.

As the technology continues to advance, digital photo frames are likely to be even more versatile and have even more features in the future.
